This 4U rackmount server is an absolute beast. The Dell PowerEdge R930 has only one chassis option to choose from: 24 Bay SFF.

24 Bay SFF

The 24 Bay SFF chassis for the PowerEdge R930 can accept up to twenty-four 2.5" SAS/SATA hard drives and/or solid state drives. This server supports hot-swap drives, meaning that drives can be added or removed while the system is powered on. The inside of the system has four CPU sockets that accept Intel Xeon E7-4800 v3/v4 and E7-8800 v3/v4 series processors. The R930 utilizes the Intel C602J chipset. The R930 can accept up to eight memory risers that each have 12 DIMM slots, putting the server at a total of 96 DIMM slots. In the middle of the chassis, between the memory risers and processors, are six hot-swap 120mm fans that provides cooling to the server's internals. The rear of the chassis includes a serial connector, a two USB ports, network daughter card slot, ten full-height PCIe 3.0 slots, one RAID PCIe slot, a VGA port, a dedicated iDRAC LAN port, and four hot-swap power supply bays.

Processing Power

The Dell PowerEdge R930 server has a max of four LGA2011-1 CPU sockets and supports Intel Xeon E7-4800 v3/v4 and E7-8800 v3/v4 series processors. The fastest speed that the installed modules can run at will be determined by the processor that is installed. If you installed a module with a speed that is higher than the maximum supported speed, that module will clock down to the max speed. For example, if your system has a max speed of 2133MT/s, and you install a 2400MT/s module, the module will clock down to 2133MT/s.

Storage

The Dell PowerEdge R930 only has support for 2.5" SAS/SATA hard drives or solid state drives. NVMe drives are much faster compared to traditional drives.
Unfortunately, there isn’t much NVMe support for the PowerEdge R930 server. There is only one option
which is: PCIe NVMe. Neither U.2 nor M.2 will work with this server.

PCIe NVMe

The only NVMe solution for the PowerEdge R930 is to use a PCIe NVMe drive. Even though this will work,
there are quite a few limitations. First of all, cannot use any PCIe NVMe drive of your choice. You can
only use drives that have Dell firmware. A non-Dell, OEM drive will not work. Even with a PCIe NVMe
drive with Dell firmware, you are still restricted. You cannot use the drive to install an operating
system or to create a virtual machine. The only thing that this NVMe solution can be used for is
additional storage. One thing to check is to make sure that the slot disablement setting in the BIOS is
enabled. If it is disabled, the drive will not be recognized by the server.

        -->

Power Supplies

Power Supplies Overview

There are a total of two power supply options for the Dell PowerEdge R930: 750W and 1100W.
